Gillis shines in win over Seawolves
Morgan Gillis made nine saves in the Mystics 2-0 defeat of the UNBSJ Seawolves Sunday afternoon in Halifax.
The Seawolves tested Mystics keeper Morgan Gillis early on in the match, with Jenna Brenton, Haley Coleman, Grace Gordon, and Scarlette MacDonald all sending shots her way within the first 12 minutes of the first half.
The Mystics responded soon after with their own with Mhyah Allen sending a ball towards the net, but UNBSJ keeper Casey Grant-Spin made the save.
Allen continued to press sending a ball to Beth Padfield, but Grant-Spin again made the save.
Mystics midfielder Emma Farrell got in close to the Seawolves net, but it was snatched away by the keeper.
In the 26th minute, Mhyah Allen moved the ball around the Seawolves defenders and put low ball to the back right corner to give the Mystics a 1-0 lead.
The Mystics continued to put pressure on the Seawolves, with Kenadie Wagg sent a long ball high to the right corner, but Grant-Spin made the save.
Lauren Seamone, Allen, and Padfield all had chances in the latter part of the first half, but were unable to convert, so the Mystics took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Grant-Spin had to leave the game due to injury in the 66th minute after making a diving save. The Mystics wasted no time in testing new keeper Kaitlyn Brzezicki, with Kate Scholz sending a tough ball her way.
Brzezicki made six saves, keeping the Seawolves in the game until Megan Ellis picked up a rebound in front of the net to put the Mystics up 2-0 in the 86th minute.
The Mystics took the win, improving to 4-0-1, while the Seawolves fell to 2-3-1.
