Mystics sweep Blue Devils 3-0
Taylor Kukurski led the Mystics to a 3-0 win over the visiting UKC Blue Devils Sunday afternoon in Halifax, N.S.
Halifax, N.S. - The MSVU Mystics defeated the UKC Blue Devils 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-14) Sunday afternoon to improve to 9-9 with two games left in the regular season.
The Blue Devils got off to a quick start, leading by as many as four points early in the first set 6-2 until Jenna Allison (Fall River, N.S.) and Seven McHatten (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) served up two and three aces respectively to put the Mystics up 10-7. They continued to lead and eventually take the first set 25-14, thanks to continued strong serving.
The second set was much closer, with both teams trading points. Both teams presented a balanced attack with Cela MacLellan (Sydney, N.S.) and Taylor Kukurski (New Denmark, N.B.) earning four kills apiece for the Mystics, while Evynne Jensen (Cochrane, Alta.), Maddie Dever (Quispamsis, N.B.) and Maya Blackwood (North Vancouver, B.C.) contributed three for the Blue Devils. The Mystics took the set 25-19.
MSVU came out strong in the third and final set, capitalizing on some Blue Devils service and attack errors. The Mystics went on a 6-point run thanks to strong serving from Maria Antle (St. John's, Nfld.) and were up 20-9 over the Blue Devils. UKC pushed back to earn a few more points, but the Mystics closed it out 25-14.
Kukurski led the Mystics with 10 kills, six dis and an ace, while MacLellan added eight kills, six digs, two blocks and an ace.
Kaitlyn Legault (Calgary, Alta.) finished the match with five kills, two digs and an ace for King's. Blackwood and Jensen added four kills apiece.
The Mystics are back in action Friday, February 20 when the travel to Truro, Nova Scotia to take on the DAL Rams. UKC will host UNBSJ Saturday, February 21.
