Mystics defeat Blue Devils in straight sets
Taylor Kukurski powered the Mystics’ offence, while Jenna Allison and Rebekah McGeoghegan added key contributions on both sides of the net to secure the straight-set win.
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics defeated the University of King's College Blue Devils in straight sets (25-22, 28-26, 25-17) at the A. Garnet Brown Memorial Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
The Mystics opened strong with a 4-0 lead to start the match, featuring a kill from Rebekah McGeoghegan (Stratford, PE), a block by Jenna Allison (Fall River, NS), an ace from Sarah Ryan (Inverness, NS), and a kill by Taylor Kukurski (New Denmark, NB). Both teams traded points throughout the opening set, but the Mystics maintained their composure to take the early advantage. The Mystics would take the first set 25-22.
In the second set, the Blue Devils jumped out to a 5-2 lead, capped by a kill from Maddie Dever (Quispamsis, NB). The Mystics quickly answered with a series of kills from Seven McHatten (Charlottetown, PE), Allison, and Kukurski to tie the score at 5-5. As the set continued, the Blue Devils pulled ahead 18-14, led by kills from Addison Doell (Davidson, SK) and Frances Cooke (Hamilton, ON). The Mystics responded with a five-point run, highlighted by three consecutive aces from Kukurski to regain the lead at 19-18. With both teams trading points late in the set, Kukurski sealed the win for the Mystics with a decisive kill, taking the set 28-26.
The Mystics carried that momentum into the third set, opening with an ace from McGeoghegan and a kill from Kukurski. Allison contributed two kills and a block in a dominant 9-2 start. The Blue Devils narrowed the gap behind an ace from Kaitlyn Legault (Calgary, AB) and two aces from Dever to make it 14-13, but the Mystics pulled away once more. A block and another kill from Allison extended the lead to 20-15. The Mystics would end up closing out the set 25-17 to secure the match in straight sets.
