Mystics Outlast Rams in Five-Set Thriller
Powered by Taylor Kukurski’s game-high 24 kills, the Mystics clawed out a thrilling five-set win over the visiting Dalhousie Rams.
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics defeated the visiting Dalhousie Rams in a dramatic five-set battle Friday evening, earning a hard-fought 3–2 victory (25-22, 22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 22-20) at the A. Garnet Brown Memorial Gymnasium.
The Mystics opened the match with strong momentum in the first set, building an early 5–1 lead behind a kill from Taylor Kukurski (New Denmark, NB) and an ace from Rebekah McGeoghegan (Stratford, PE). Despite a push from the Rams led by consecutive kills from Callie Immerkar (Swan River, MB), the Mystics continued to extend their advantage with timely blocks by Jenna Allison (Fall River, NS) and Sarah Ryan (Inverness, NS). A late surge from the Rams, sparked by three aces from Immerkar, tightened the score, but the Mystics held on to claim the opening set 25–22.
The second set saw shifts in momentum as both sides battled for control. After trading early points, the Rams pieced together a six-point run to take a 7–3 lead, highlighted by an Ashley Rideout (Conception Bay South, NL) ace and more powerful hitting from Immerkar. The Mystics narrowed the deficit behind a Kukurski kill and another Allison block, eventually taking a brief 16–15 lead thanks to a kill from Emily Murphy (Moncton, NB). However, a late Rams run led by Immerkar's serving lifted Dalhousie to a 25–22 set win, evening the match.
In the third set, the Mystics again opened strong with contributions from Allison and Murphy, but the Rams took control at 11–9 with kills from Immerkar and Rideout. The Rams maintained pressure throughout, pulling away to secure a 25–17 win and a 2–1 match lead.
Needing a response, the Mystics delivered in the fourth set. They stormed out to a 5–0 lead powered by two kills from Ryan and another from Kukurski. While the Rams chipped away at the deficit, additional offense from Mia Murphy (Truro, NS) and Cela MacLellan (Sydney, NS) kept the Mystics in front. After the Rams briefly seized a late lead, the Mystics answered with a crucial four-point run highlighted by Ryan's blocking and hitting. The Mystics held firm to close out the set 25–23, forcing a decisive fifth frame.
The final set featured dramatic swings, beginning with a 5–0 Rams run sparked by back-to-back aces from Zoe Erikson (Fort McMurray, AB). The Mystics quickly countered, with Murphy and Ryan delivering aces of their own to close the gap. Down 7–5, the Mystics surged ahead with three straight points, including consecutive kills from Allison and Kukurski to move in front 8–7. Both teams traded crucial points down the stretch, battling to a 20–20 deadlock. With the match on the line, the Mystics closed the night in decisive fashion, securing the final two points on kills by Kukurski and Murphy to win the set 22–20 and the match 3–2.
