MacPhail leads the Mystics to victory over Dragons 3-0
The Mystics defeated the Dragons in consecutive sets, 25-23, 25-15, and 25-20.
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics topped l'universite de Sainte-Anne Dragons 3-0, by scores of 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 at the A. Garnet Brown Memorial Gymnasium.
The Dragons started the opening set on fire, jumping out to an early lead which was highlighted by an ace by Amy Arsenault (Rivière-à-la-Truite, NB) to give the Dragons a 5-1 lead. Catherine MacPhail (Halifax, NS) led the Mystics attack in the first set, capped off with seven kills. McKenzie Antle had 14 assists in the set for the Mystics.
The Mystics continued their momentum from the first set victory with a 6-0 run to start the second set, forcing the Dragons to call a timeout. Hannah Huntley (Truro, NS) had two aces, and Cela MacLellan (Sydney, NS) had two kills during this run. Arsenault record a kill in an attempt to change the momentum for the Dragons. The two teams traded points throughout the set and the Dragons were able to cut the Mystics lead down to 19-13, but the Mystics attack was too much in the second set. The Mystics ended up winning the set 25-15, highlighted by MacPhail's seven kills in the set. Huntley had six digs in the set for the Mystics. Kyana Brideau had four kills for the Dragons in the set.
As the Mystics looked to close out the Dragons in the third set, MacLellan had two consecutive kills to give the Mystics an early 9-4 advantage. A few plays later, MacLellan was able to win a point for the Mystics winning a joust at the net, giving the Mystics a 11-6 lead. The Dragons looked to make a run in the set, with Bright notching a crucial kill to close the gap. The Mystics stayed steady despite the Dragon's best efforts, and closed out the match, winning 25-20.
