Mystics Surge Late to Defeat Seawolves in Halifax
A tight first half gave way to a dominant second‑half push as the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics pulled away from the UNBSJ Seawolves for a 68–56 home victory on Saturday afternoon.
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics defeated the UNBSJ Seawolves 68–56 on Saturday afternoon at the A. Garnet MacDonald Memorial Gymnasium.
Emma Empringham (Sackville, NS) led the charge for the Mystics, recording a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also added 5 steals. Jenna Matheson (Halifax, NS) posted a double-double of her own with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Ainsley Green (Perth-Andover, NB) led the Seawolves with a team-high 15 points and added 9 rebounds. Maddie Baker (Oxford, NS) contributed 11 points off the bench for UNBSJ.
To open the game, Keezaidra Smith (North Preston, NS) connected from three-point range to put the Mystics on the board. The Seawolves responded with a three from Eden Searles (Campobello Island, NB) to take a 5–3 lead. The teams traded baskets throughout the quarter. The Mystics took a mid‑quarter lead when Matheson scored on a driving layup to make it 11–10. In a low-scoring frame, the visiting Seawolves held a narrow 17–15 advantage after one.
The Seawolves opened the scoring in the second quarter with a driving layup, but momentum swung as the Mystics answered with back‑to‑back layups from Matheson and Empringham to tie the game at 21–21. The Mystics extended their lead when Victoria Mumford (Fall River, NS) connected from three-point range to make it 26–21. The Seawolves clawed back to close the gap, but the Mystics held a 32–29 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Mystics went on an early run capped by a three-pointer from Celine Sterckel (Moncton, NB). They continued to get strong production from their bench, highlighted by a low‑post finish from Kelsey Matheson (Halifax, NS). The Seawolves responded late in the quarter when Baker hit a three to cut the deficit to 49–44 heading into the final period.
The Mystics extended their lead early in the fourth, highlighted by a layup from Empringham. The Seawolves attempted to close the gap midway through the quarter, but the deficit proved too much, and the Mystics secured the 68–56 victory.
The Mystics and Seawolves return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
