Strickland leads Mystics to win over UKC
Victoria Strickland netted 15 points in the Mystics 71-52 defeat of the UKC Blue Devils Saturday afternoon in Halifax.
Victoria Strickland started the scoring with a three-pointer to give the Mystics and early 3-0 lead.
King's struggled to score in the first few minutes, but quickly found their footing thanks to balanced scoring from Kai Raphael, Zoe Mombourquette, Gracie Doirion and Sydney Flora-Kirsch.
The Mystics added pressure, forcing some King's turnovers and did a good job of keeping the ball in their end, but struggled to score. King's added some pressure of their own and capitalized on a couple of Mystics turnovers to lead 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams came out hot, trading three-point shots to get things started in the second quarter with Mombourquette and Strickland making their first attempts.
It was a defensive second quarter, with both teams forcing turnovers. The Mystics out-scored the Blue Devils in the second quarter 21-17 to close the gap and tie things up at 36-36 to end the first half.
MSVU started to pull away in the second half, thanks to a solid defensive team performance and offensive output from Emma Empringham and Kelsey Matheson. The Mystics led 52-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mystics continued to increase their lead, winning by as many as 21 points in the final quarter and closed out the game, winning 71-52.
Leading the way for the Mystics was Victoria Strickland who scored 15 points and added three steals and a rebound. Emma Empringham had 11 rebounds and seven points.
Ryan Santimaw had a team-high 13 points to lead the Blue Devils. Carlie Best added 10 points of her own while Zoe Mombourquette had eight.
The Mystics are back in action tomorrow when they host the Mount Allison Mounties at 2pm. UKC is back in action next weekend.
