Mystics play to 2-2 tie with Chargers
Cole Hutchison-Mills and Cooper McVicar-Smith both scored in the Mystics 2-2 draw with the Crandall Chargers Sunday afternoon in Halifax.
The Mystics had a lot of chances early in the match, including a sharp shot from Cole Hutchison-Mills off a pass from his brother Noah, but Crandall keeper Tim Leaman made his first of 14 saves in the game.
Both teams traded chances early on with Manil Alaouche was dangerous for the Chargers and had an early chance that was broken up by MSVU keeper Tristan Brocklehurst.
Noah Hutchison-Mills sent a free kick to the Chargers net, but Leaman made the save. Noah worked the ball in close through a number of Chargers defenders not long after, but Leaman pounced on the ball before he could get a shot off.
His teammate Prabhjyot Pannu sent a dangerous ball towards the net from the top of the 18 yard box, but Leaman made the save.
The Mystics continued to press with chance after chance, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The momentum shifted late in the first half when Ethan Cowan scored off a corner kick to put the Chargers up 1-0 with six minutes left in regulation.
The Chargers got their second goal two minutes later after Alaouche capitalized on a big throw in and sent the ball to the back of the net to go up 2-0.
In the second half, the Mystics had some chances early on, as did the Chargers and both keepers came up big.
Cole Hutchison-Mills was moving the ball towards the net, but was hauled down and a penalty kick was awarded. He took advantage of the opportunity to score and cut the Chargers lead in half in the 62nd minute.
Engergized by the goal, the Mystics continued to create scoring opportunities, but the Chargers maintained their one-goal advantage until Pannu sent a shot towards the Crandall net. Leaman made the save but gave up a rebound to Cooper McVicar-Smith who sent the ball to the back of the net with just 10 minutes left in regulation play.
Tensions were high as both teams traded scoring opportunities, but neither could convert, leaving the match tied 2-2 after the final whistle.
The Mystics are currently in fourth-place in the standings and host the UKC Blue Devils Thursday evening. The fifth-place Chargers are also in action Thursday night when they host the Dalhousie Rams.
