Mystics cruise to 94-68 victory over Tommies
An all-around performance by the Mystics help lead them past the visiting Tommies Saturday evening.
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 94-68 at the A. Garnet Brown Memorial Gymnasium Saturday evening.
Isaiah Cromwell-Wright (Dartmouth, NS) led the way for the Mystics finishing with a game-high 29 points, while collecting 8 rebounds. Adam Callaghan (Sydney, NS) finished with 20 points, including 6 three pointers. Chase Tynes (Loon Lake, NS) record a 13 point, 13 assist, 10 rebound triple-double while recording 4 steals for the Mystics.
Vincent Lytteton (Markham, ON) finished with a team-high 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Jeven Eddy (Ajax, ON) had a double-double for the Tommies, as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. River Lanz (Rothesay, NB) chipped in with 9 points off the bench for the Tommies.
The Mystics opened up the game aggressively as Ben Kearney (New Waterford, NS) would get the hosts on the board off the assist by Adam Callaghan (Sydney, NS). On the next play, Chase Tynes (Loon Lake, NS) would grab the defensive rebound and he pushed the ball quickly to Callaghan in transition as he would connect from deep. The Mystics would continue to apply pressure as they would go on an 18-2 run, capped off by threes by Isaiah Cromwell-Wright (Dartmouth, NS) and Mekhi Paris (Truro, NS). The Tommies would call a timeout to recollect. The Tommies would attack the basket but Anthony Lecky (Sydney River, NS) would deny the attempt which would lead to a Tynes and-one finish. Late in the quarter, the Tommies would respond to the Mystics as River Lanz (Rothesay, NB) would connect on a three point attempt and Jeven Eddy (Ajax, ON) would use his strength to finish down low. The Mystics would respond with two key plays in the final minute. First, Nate Titus (Stouffville, ON) would dive to the basket off the baseline out-of-bounds play off the Tynes entry pass. Off the Tommies' missed field goal, Tynes would collect the defensive rebound and send a full court outlet pass that found Callaghan wide open in the right corner where he would connect on his second triple of the quarter. The Mystics would take the 29-15 lead into the second quarter.
The Tommies came out of the break aggressively, as they would get strong plays from Marcus Wilson (Miramichi, NB) as he would connect on a mid range jumper. Eddy would continue to battle low in the post as he would finish over his defender. As the quarter continued, it was a battle from range as Callaghan would connect from deep three times for the Mystics. The Tommies would get a quick surge from Vincent Lyttleton (Markham, ON) as he would get connect on three consecutive threes. Late in the quarter, the Mystics would get more production from Cromwell-Wright as he would hit consecutive threes to help the hosts maintain their lead. He would continue to support the Mystics' charge as he would connect on a mid range step back to give the Mystics a 50-39 lead at halftime.
The Tommies struck first in the second half as Evan Valanne (Miramichi, NB) would connect from deep. The Mystics would answer right away as Kearney would finish at the basket on consecutive drives off Tynes' assists. Momentum would stay with the Mystics as Callaghan would gather the ball off the Tommies' turnover and find Tynes in transition for the alley-oop dunk. Cromwell-Wright would continue to be an offensive monster for the Mystics, as he would follow a teammate's missed shot attempt for the put back lay-up followed by another mid range jumper and a bank three from the right wing as the Mystics would extend their lead to 73-55 going into the fourth quarter.
As the game continued to go back and forth, Tynes would continue to his all-around performance when he connected on a mid-quarter three from the top of the key. He would collect his tenth rebound midway through the quarter as he would go on to record a triple-double. The Mystics would hold on to secure the crucial victory by a 94-68 margin.
Both teams return to the court as they face off in the second game of the double-header. Tip off is at 5:00pm.
