African Heritage Month
February is African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia.
February is African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia.
This year’s provincial theme is: “Strength in Unity: Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power, and Progress.” This theme speaks to "the power that comes when African Nova Scotians and people of African descent stand together with a shared sense of direction. It recognizes unity as an active force for change that strengthens communities, advances justice, and creates new opportunities."
In honour of this theme, the Mystics would like to spotlight the extensive contributions and immeasurable impact of people of Black and African descent across MSVU athletics programs, the university, our community, and beyond. Our Black and African Nova Scotian student-athletes and coaching staff are leaders in their sports and in our league. Their long-standing contributions have made our program what it is today.
Throughout February, we will:
- Highlight student-athletes of Black and African descent in our weekly "Meet the Mystics" features.
- Acknowledge the importance of the occasion at each of our home games by playing Lift Every Voice and Sing in lieu of the Canadian national anthem,
- Wear specially-designed warm-up shirts that highlight the Pan-African flag.
